Recovery is not a setback: Why taking breaks makes you faster

Training is important. Recovery is just as important. Your body doesn’t become stronger through effort alone, but above all through the right adaptation afterwards. Good recovery helps you stay fresh, motivated and healthy.

Why recovery is part of progress

When preparing for the Cyclotour du Léman, recovery deserves a deliberate place in your training. It’s not a wasted training day, but an important part of your progress. When you train, you place stress on your body. Afterwards, it needs time to adapt – and it’s during this phase that your endurance improves and your body gets ready for the next session.

Training too hard too often can have the opposite effect: fatigue, heavy legs, reduced motivation or stagnating performance.

Key factors for good recovery

● Sleep: one of the most important recovery factors – good sleep helps your body adapt better to training.
● Post-workout nutrition: after longer or more intense sessions, your body needs energy, fluids and protein.
● Easy movement: very light sessions can help loosen up your legs – the key is to keep them truly easy.
● Training management: not every week needs to be harder – recovery periods help you consolidate your progress.
● Mental recovery: your mind needs breaks too. Everyday stress also affects your ability to handle training load.

The simple rule of thumb

Recovery is not a setback. It’s the moment when your body becomes stronger.

Pay attention to the signals your body is giving you. If you’re constantly tired, sleeping poorly, unusually irritable or noticing a drop in performance, it may be a sign that you need more recovery.
